What To Wear To… Yoga!

Welcome to our “what to wear to…” series. This week we’re helping you perfect your yoga threads, to make sure there’s no down-dog flashing, or leg-extension restricting going on as you move through your favourite asanas! No matter what yogic style you prefer to salute the sun in, you’ll need to be wearing unrestrictive clothes that allows you to move through those tricksy poses in comfort and style. And remember, flashing the person behind you as you bend and stretch can be more awkward than any contorted yoga position, so it's not all about fashion and cut - there’s an extra element to think about when you select your fabrics too.

Yoga Session Fash-Pack Checklist...

Item #1 - Leggings

Fitted leggings in a soft, natural fabric with added thickness or a good lining are imperative. A thick or brushed cotton that feels good against the skin during practice and won’t give away your best kept undergarment secrets by stretching too thin over your butt is important – if not for you then certainly for the girl or guy behind you!  Choose tights with a thick and soft waistband to prevent any 'compromising' poses, especially during inversions and likewise, a diamond gusset will be more flattering and comfortable in any split-leg poses, if you know what I mean…

Item # 2 – Bra

A seamless crop-top style bra is best for yoga's lower intensity vibe.  Ditch the underwire and get comfy, because bounce will not be a problem here and comfort as you “oohhmm” is imperative!

Item # 3 – Fitted singlet/top

A top with plenty of room for movement and in a breathable fabric is what you're after.  Even better, go for one with an elastic waistband and suitable neckline (i.e. higher cut or a tighter fit), so you don't have anything “fall out” as you move through your asanas and aren’t fidgeting during the class. You’ll also want your teacher to be able to see your form and help you out with adjustments if necessary, so go streamlined!

Item #4 – If Bikram’s Your Thing, Go Shorty!

If you’re a Bikram lover, a pair of teeny-tiny hot shorts is acceptable no matter your shape or sex – even the boys get involved with the shortest of man shorts making an appearance! It’s gonna get HOT in there, so go for it but DO make sure your short-shorts are well fitted and won’t slide to the side, or gape as you bend and stretch – shorts with in-built undies can be your best friend. This is doubly important if you’re a man – we sincerely hope bits-out yoga never makes an appearance in Bondi studios!
