Why exercise is like a cup of tea

You know the feeling. It’s been a big day, a huge week, a gigantic month. Too much computer time has left you feeling exhausted, brain fried and quite frankly, disconnected from life. Then the weekend arrives and you spend it posting to Instagram, mindlessly scrolling through Facebook, watching TV, or downing a few drinks to help you ‘unwind’. Monday arrives before you know it, and well before you’re ready to face it. Sound familiar?

We’re missing out on meaningful connection!

We live in a world that’s more ‘connected’ than ever before, but with less meaningful connections. We’ve lost a meaningful connection with our food because everything is pre-packaged and stuffed with chemicals that make us sick. We’ve lost a meaningful connection with our bodies because we spend so much time plugged in to our computers and so little time out in the real world. We’ve lost a meaningful connection with our community because we spend so much time at work or at home, and much of that time with our face in a screen. And because we so often judge ourselves on other peoples’ highlight reels and not the real, gritty, behind-the-scenes action, we judge ourselves way too harshly. What happened to undistracted and uninhibited laughing with your friends for entertainment, spilling your deepest secrets over warm cups of tea? What happened to logging off at 5pm to spend quality time with the people you love?

The solution?

I like to think that exercise (any kind!) can step up and fill part of the connection gap. Maybe if it was just given a chance to shake off its stigma as something you ‘have to do’ to keep your waistline in check, and instead become something enjoyable. Perhaps then it could take its place beside that symbolic cup of tea? I think so.If you could wake up every day to giggles with your girlfriends as you complete a workout, taking a few deep breaths while you stretch together at sunrise, or having long chats over a good walk or run to wrap up the day, topped off with the rush of happy hormones a good bit of movement always delivers, wouldn’t that be better than an hour in front of the TV, on your phone, or in your own head?

We want to help

One of our big goals here at BUF Girls is to help women everywhere prioritise and celebrate real life connections again. We believe in community, in sharing the real stuff and celebrating the good times with more than just an #instayay (although there’s nothing wrong with that, in moderation!).We want to reconnect people with food through understanding nutrition and making it simple. We’re passionate about reconnecting women with their bodies by making them want to move and get outside into nature. We’re reconnecting people and communities through health and fitness, both online and offline. This is how we want to contribute to make the world a better place. We like to think of it as if we’re brewing a giant cup of tea to share with girls everywhere!

What’s coming up with BUF Girls

We’re in the process of building a brand new website with the goal of connecting you to other women wanting to create change. And to introduce you to inspiring, real stories of women who are leading the way, from all around the globe. In the meantime, we’re focused on looking for little ways to create more space and connection in our lives, and those of others. That could mean anything from turning off our TVs Monday to Friday, to switching our phones off on weekends, starting a new exercise routine with friends by our side, learning how to ‘yoga’, or swapping the Friday wine-for-one, for tea-for-two.And remember, whatever you love to do, make sure you’re doing it for the love of it!
