Why Girls Should Try MMA
My new found obsession is MMA or Mixed Martial Arts training. It might sound a little hard core, I certainly used to think so, but I'm surprised to say I am LOVING it! So much so that this is my shout out to all you lovely BUF girls to give it a go...at least once! Here's a little more about it...
What is it?
MMA has been around for hundreds of years but hit the mainstream in the mid 90's with the launch of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The UFC was an experiment to test just one thing... out of all the fighters, across all the disciplines and traditions in the world, who is the very best? Suddenly you've got boxers, kickboxers, wrestlers and martial artists of all forms in the same ring... actually, it's a cage... with no rules. The type of training required to survive, let alone win, in this environment is some of the very toughest there is. It needs to be.If you've ever done boxing training you'll know what a killer workout it is. Well, combine those jabs and power punches using your upper body with kicks and sprawls using your whole body and you've got yourself one serious calorie burner! The constant change of focus from upper to lower body and back again creates a whole new level of challenge.Thankfully, the combinations you perform on the body bag are blows to an imaginary opponent and once you've mastered your technique, the intensity of the workout will increase rapidly.
What can it do for me?
- Serious fat burn... up to 600 calories in just an hour!
- Tone and strengthen your upper AND lower body, including your butt and legs.
- Improve your coordination, balance, stability and flexibility.
- Improved strength, cardio AND endurance (great for getting that lean, 'cut' look).
- Better joint movement and efficiency.
- Learn some basic self-defence skills.
- Bashing away your frustrations can give you some serious stress relief!
Where can I do it?
Our new studio on Bondi Rd (AGOGA) runs two outdoor MMA sessions on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. We also do weekend workshops from time to time, so keep your eyes peeled!
